Seattle fans will get to watch Minnesota’s all-time leading goal scorer take the next step in her career with the Torrent. Second overall pick Abbey Murphy has signed a two-year contract, bringing Olympic gold-medal experience and a prolific collegiate scoring record to Seattle’s forward group.

A scorer with a standout résumé

Murphy finished her five-year University of Minnesota career with 261 points, including 143 goals and 118 assists, in 171 games. She leaves as the program’s career goals leader and second all-time in points.

The 24-year-old from Evergreen Park, IL, was a two-time captain and delivered her strongest season as a graduate student in 2025-26. She set career highs with 40 goals and 66 points in 31 appearances, leading the nation in points per game (2.13) and goals per game (1.29).

Murphy was a top three finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award and earned First Team All-American and WCHA Forward of the Year honours.

With the United States, she won Olympic gold at Milano Cortina 2026 and silver at Beijing 2022. She also has four IIHF Women’s World Championship medals, two gold and two silver.

What Seattle expects

“Abbey will make an immediate impact in this league with her grit, creativity, and attack mentality,”

Meghan Turner, Torrent General Manager

Turner said the two-year contract gives Seattle time to develop with Murphy as she establishes herself at this level and the team builds for future seasons. She also said the Torrent are ready to get Murphy on the ice in November.

Murphy said spending time in Seattle this summer, meeting fans and getting to know the community heightened her excitement about calling the city home and playing at Climate Pledge Arena.

How the roster is taking shape

Murphy joins a signed forward group that includes Alex Carpenter, Julia Gosling, Danielle Serdachny, Lexie Adzija, Mikyla Grant-Mentis, Gabrielle David, Theresa Schafzahl, Lily Delianedis and Emma Nuutinen.

Seattle also has defenders Emily Brown, Lyndie Lobdell, Noemi Neubauerová, Aneta Tejralová and Anna Wilgren under contract, along with goaltenders Hannah Murphy and CJ Jackson. Murphy’s signing brings the total to 17 players for the upcoming season.
